Interlochen Center for the Arts is looking to hire a Dance Instructors for 2019 Interlochen Arts Camp. The dates of the contract are either June 21 - July 13 or July 15 - August 4 and the stipend for the entire duration of the contract ranges based on experience. Faculty have a choice of on-campus or off-campus housing.

Dance instructors will teach a variety of classes during camp including; ballet, modern, pointe, repertory, composition, conditioning, and jazz classes. We are looking for a focus in classical ballet and contemporary dance technique. Instructors will need to be aware of student injuries and health-related concerns, as well as act as a mentor to students. Dance instructors will need to collaborate with accompanists, collaborative pianists, other dance faculty members, and maintain a professional and warm presence around students. A daily schedule will be 8:30am-5:00pm for faculty members, and will include auditions, class instruction, and placement of dancers in programs. Dance faculty members will be responsible for attending technical stage rehearsals and performances of which they are involved in as stagers or choreographers.

The Camp enrolls nearly 2500 students, of which 8% are international, and over 25% are racial/ethnic minorities.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree and / or Completed Dance Teacher Certification Preferred

  • Experience dealing with dance students from grades 3-12

  • Experience in the professional and/or academic dance community as an instructor, performer and choreographer - though priority will be given toward instructional experience. Choreographic opportunities may present themselves as needed but it should be noted this is not a choreographic residency.

  • Time management and ability to deal with student behavioral concerns is crucial

  • Experience in both realms of classical ballet and contemporary dance technique

  • Candidate should be an advocate for age appropriate dance students seeking potential admission to the year-round Interlochen Arts Academy

Housing and Meals:

A $10.00/night stipend is included in your agreement to go towards the cost of your housing choice. On-campus housing is subject to availability. (early arrival/late stay requests, if available, will be paid in full by the employee). Lunch is included with your agreement and is available to you through our various cafeterias on campus.
